I’m a student of success. Recently, I’ve been wondering…
When it comes to achieving goals, what do successful people do differently?
In my opinion, it a deceptively easy answer. Successful goal achievers adjust their identity easily.
This may sound simple. In fact, it’s anything but.
I go into a little detail in the video, but here are the basics…
In physics we are taught that an object in motion, tends to stay in motion and that an object at rest, tends to stay at rest. When it comes to your identity, that translates to “You will be… who you are now.” So here’s the question.
Who are you, right now? I don’t mean a title. I mean… who do you FEEL like most of the time?
Do you feel like a struggling entrepreneur? Are you a salesperson who isn’t quite making the grade? Are you a slow learner? Do you feel like someone who is always having to live paycheck to paycheck?
Think about this. Your future is easy to predict. You will be tomorrow… exactly who you are today.
If you want to change your future, you need to change your identity… NOW.
What makes up your identity and how do you change it?
Your identity is the sum total of the beliefs you currently have. It’s not the beliefs you used to have and it’s not the beliefs you know you should have. It’s the beliefs you have right now.
If you aren’t taking the action you know you need to, it’s because you have a belief that says action isn’t a high priority. If you have a problem closing sales, it’s because you have a belief that closing sales is difficult… or people won’t like you… or that you aren’t the type of person who likes pressuring people. If you have a challenge reading quickly, it’s because you believe you a slow learner or reading is difficult or that you don’t have a long attention span, etc.
I don’t know what personal beliefs are holding you back. Beliefs are unique to every individual. Nonetheless, it’s those beliefs that create your identity.
If you aren’t happy with who you are, how do you change it?

3 Simple Ways to Change Your Identity
- Ask different questions. Beliefs are created by the questions we ask ourselves. If you want more useful beliefs, ask different questions. Instead of “Why am I such a slow reader?” ask “How many different ways are their for me to read faster?” Instead of “How come I have a problem getting anything done? ask “What’s the easiest thing I can do, right now, to have an impact on my day?”
- “Act as if…” This is one of the easiest things to start with. Ask yourself, “If I were who I wanted to be, what would I be doing, thinking, feeling… right now?” This is the single biggest question to keep in the forefront of your thoughts. You’ll find your brain will deliver the answers you need AND you’ll start to naturally grow into who you truly are.
- Break the pattern. The only reason you are who you are today, is because that’s who you were yesterday. You’re in a pattern and you need to interrupt that pattern. It won’t last long, but when that pattern is interrupted you’ll have a few moments to insert better questions and “Act as if….” What can you do to interrupt your pattern? Change your deodorant, cologne, soap or perfume. Your sense of smell is primal. If you change your smell, it will trigger moments of awareness throughout the day. It’s in those moments of awareness that you’ll be able to think and feel differently. You can do anything that will make you notice something is different. Try putting your clothes on in a different order, taking a different way to work, anything to break the hypnosis!
I’ll most likely come back to this topic but would really appreciate your input. What are your thoughts?
